THEORETICAL PROJECT
2012
This project is a theoretical proposal included in the thesis "Regeneration of the San Juan River in Teotihuacan," which received an honorable mention in 2012 and was developed as part of the Master's program in Management and Creative Transformation of the City at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. The initiative seeks to revitalize the San Juan River, a waterway essential to the historical and cultural development of the Valley of Mexico, currently in a state of neglect and deterioration. Through this regeneration, the project aims to reactivate the social, economic, and environmental life of the municipality of San Juan Teotihuacan, promoting ecological balance and a reconnection between the community and its cultural and natural environment. The river, once sacred and vital, will be restored to transform the area into a pedestrian corridor, re-establishing the relationship between the town and its historical heritage and generating a dynamic and sustainable public space.
Community and Cultural Reconnection
The proposal aims to strengthen the bond between the residents of San Juan Teotihuacán, the river, and their cultural heritage. Restoring this space will allow the community to rediscover the historical and spiritual value the river has held since pre-Hispanic times. Furthermore, it seeks to regenerate a sense of belonging through activities and spaces that promote community and respect for the environment.Creation of a Linear Park and Pedestrian Corridor
The riverbanks will be transformed into a linear park, providing an attractive and safe pedestrian walkway. This corridor will not only connect the two parts of the municipality, currently separated by the archaeological zone, but will also offer visitors and residents a promenade leading to the town center, integrating pedestrian streets and recreational spaces.Local Economic Revitalization
With the creation of the linear park and associated public spaces, it is expected that the flow of tourists to the town center will increase, promoting an economic boost that has been scarce until now. The regeneration of the river and its surroundings will transform San Juan Teotihuacán into a more complete and attractive tourist destination, offering visitors a place to enjoy themselves and contribute to the local economy.Environmental Restoration and Biodiversity
By cleaning and revitalizing the riverbed and its tributaries, the project will contribute to the recovery of local vegetation and wildlife, creating a microclimate that will benefit the region. The reintroduction of native flora and fauna will not only improve biodiversity but also capture water and particles from the environment, helping to reduce pollution and stabilize the local climate.Generation of Green Spaces and Water Capture
The vegetation that will thrive on the regenerated riverbanks will act as a green lung for the region, producing oxygen and capturing rainwater. This vegetation will also contribute to regulating local temperatures, improving the quality of life for residents and promoting sustainable practices that favor ecosystem conservation.Water Rehabilitation and Environmental Quality Improvements
The regeneration of the San Juan River involves cleaning up its currently polluted waters and preserving them as a vital water resource for the community. This rehabilitation will have positive effects on public health and the aesthetics of the landscape, fostering an environment where clean water and natural vegetation transform air quality and the overall environment.
This theoretical project is a comprehensive initiative that aims to restore the San Juan River to its central role in the life of the municipality of San Juan Teotihuacán, creating a green public space that generates local economic activity and promotes environmental well-being. The revitalization of the river, along with the creation of a linear park, will allow for the re-establishment of community ties and cultural identity, and will position the area as a model of ecological regeneration and social cohesion.
