This extension project seeks to adapt a small existing construction in the Jardín Balbuena neighborhood, so that the resulting spaces promote a natural connection with the exterior and optimize the functionality of the home for a family, taking advantage of a layout that enhances natural light and ventilation. By incorporating a side patio as the main access, the extension generates a fluid transition between the exterior and the interior, in addition to offering an outdoor living area.
In Mexico City, within the Jardín Balbuena neighborhood, a home is being expanded with a focus on efficiency and space regeneration. The intervention begins by taking advantage of the original structure, to which a side patio is added, which becomes the main access and an area for recreation and contact with the outside. This extension allows the home to be organized on two levels: on the ground floor there are common areas, such as the living room, dining room and kitchen, which are articulated in an open space that integrates with the patio. On the upper floor, there are three bedrooms and two bathrooms, providing residents with privacy and functionality in a compact but well-structured environment.
The side patio is the key element of the design, as it offers an access area and an outdoor space that naturally illuminates and ventilates the interior spaces. This layout, which places the social areas on the ground floor and the private areas on the upper floor, generates a clear and functional circulation. The living-dining-kitchen area on the ground floor allows for efficient use of space and a visual connection with the patio, creating a feeling of spaciousness and continuity between the interior and exterior.
Utilization of Outdoor Spaces: The design incorporates a side patio that contributes to the environmental quality of the home, generating a naturally illuminated and ventilated entrance. This green space not only improves thermal and visual comfort, but also becomes a living area that adds regenerative value to the immediate urban environment.
Light and Ventilation Optimization: The orientation and layout of the patio allows for the maximization of natural light into the common areas and bedrooms, which reduces the need for artificial lighting during the day and improves ventilation, creating a healthier and more energy-efficient environment.
Adaptation and Reuse of the Existing Structure: By integrating the original construction into the design, the project not only optimizes resources, but also minimizes environmental impact by reducing the need for new materials. The extension respects the scale and context of the neighborhood, maintaining the residential character of the area.
The extension of this house in Jardín Balbuena is an example of regenerative intervention in a dense urban context, where every square meter counts. Through an efficient scheme that prioritizes the use of exterior space and optimizes natural light and ventilation conditions, the project achieves a home that not only adapts to the needs of its inhabitants, but also respects and enriches its immediate surroundings.
